Tesla tire rotation: how often and which pattern

EVs are heavy and have instant torque, so tires wear faster than many owners expect. Regular rotation is the cheapest way to make a set last.

Short answerTesla recommends rotating tires every 6,250 miles (10,000 km), or sooner if the tread depth difference between tires reaches 2/32 in (1.5 mm). The pattern depends on your tires: same-size non-directional tires can move front to rear; directional tires stay on their side; staggered sizes swap left to right only. After rotating, reset the reminder in Controls → Service → Wheel & Tire → Tires.

How often to rotate

Tesla's maintenance schedule and Service Manual give the same rule for Model 3 and Model Y: every 6,250 miles (10,000 km) or when tread depth differs by 2/32 in (1.5 mm) or more, whichever comes first. Tesla also recommends replacing tires in pairs unless the others are within 2/32 in of a new tire.

Which pattern? (from Tesla's Service Manual)

Your tiresPattern
Non-directional, all the same sizeFronts go to the opposite side at the rear; rears move straight forward. (Tesla Mobile Service only does same-side or same-axle swaps.)
Non-directional, front and rear different sizes (staggered)Swap left and right on each axle. Don't move front to rear.
Directional (arrow on the sidewall)Front to rear on the same side. Don't move left to right.

Reset the tire service reminder

  1. After the rotation, tap Controls → Service → Wheel & Tire → Tires.
  2. Choose the tire season and tap Reset.
  3. Drive normally; the tire pressure sensors may need a short drive to relearn positions. If a TPMS warning appears, see our tire pressure warning guide.

Where to get it done

Book a rotation in the Tesla app (Mobile Service can come to you) or use any tire shop. Prices vary by location and shop, so check the quote in the app. Ask the shop to set pressures to the door-pillar cold value afterwards.

Ask AI when it's due

With AskMyEV connected, your AI can read your odometer and tire pressure trend, and tell you how many miles since your last noted rotation.

Your odometer is 20,382 mi. On Tesla's 6,250-mile interval, rotations fall at 18,750 and 25,000 mi, so if you rotated at 18,750 you're due around 25,000.

Pressures look even, so nothing urgent.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I rotate Tesla tires?

Every 6,250 miles (10,000 km), or sooner if tread depth differs by 2/32 in (1.5 mm) or more, per Tesla.

What is the Tesla tire rotation pattern?

Same-size non-directional tires: fronts to the opposite rear, rears straight forward. Directional tires: front to rear on the same side. Staggered sizes: swap left and right only.

How do I reset the tire rotation reminder on a Tesla?

Tap Controls → Service → Wheel & Tire → Tires, choose the tire season and tap Reset.

Do Tesla tires wear faster?

EVs are heavy and have instant torque, so tires can wear faster than on a comparable gas car. Regular rotation and correct pressure help most.
