Battery and drive unit warranty by model (US)
| Model | Term | Minimum capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3 RWD, Model Y RWD, Model Y AWD (standard) | 8 years or 100,000 miles | 70% |
| Model 3/Y Premium (Long Range) and Performance | 8 years or 120,000 miles | 70% |
| Model S, Model X, Cybertruck | 8 years or 150,000 miles | 70% |
“Whichever comes first” applies: a car that hits the miles in year 5 is out of battery warranty in year 5. The clock starts when the car is first delivered to its first owner, not when you bought it, and the coverage transfers to later owners. Older cars follow the warranty that applied when they were sold (for example, many 2012–2020 Model S/X had 8-year unlimited-mile coverage), so check the warranty document that came with your car.
How the 70% rule works
Tesla promises the pack will keep at least 70% of its original capacity during the warranty period. If it measurably falls below that, Tesla repairs or replaces it so it's back above the line for the rest of the term. Two details matter:
- The range number on the screen isn't the test. Tesla's warranty says range estimates are an imperfect measure of capacity; Tesla measures capacity its own way.
- Replacements are often remanufactured. Tesla may use a refurbished pack in a condition “appropriate to the age and mileage” of the car, not necessarily a brand-new one.
Real-world packs rarely get close: Recurrent's owner data shows Model 3 and Model Y at about 93–95% of original range after five years (see our degradation comparison).
What the battery warranty doesn't cover
- Damage from a collision, flood, fire or road debris (that's an insurance claim).
- Damage from opening or modifying the pack outside Tesla, or ignoring alerts asking you to service the car.
- Gradual capacity loss that stays above 70%. That's normal aging.
- The small 12V/16V low-voltage battery: it's under the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty instead (see our 12V battery guide).
What a replacement costs out of warranty
| Situation | Typical price (US, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Model 3 or Model Y pack at a Tesla Service Center | About $13,000–$20,000 incl. labor (Recurrent's Model 3 example: ~$15,800 = ~$13,500 pack + ~$2,300 labor) |
| Model S or Model X pack at Tesla | Often $20,000 or more |
| Remanufactured pack at an independent EV shop | Often several thousand dollars less (owner reports of ~$8,000 for a Model 3); check the shop's high-voltage credentials and its warranty |
| Module or component repair (when only part of the pack failed) | Much less than a full pack, where a shop offers it |
One owner on r/TeslaLounge reported paying $12,644 at Tesla for a 2018 Model 3 Long Range at 151,000 miles, with a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty on the remanufactured replacement. Always get a written quote in the Tesla app and a second opinion.
Buying a used Tesla
- Look up the original delivery date and current mileage, then work out how much battery warranty is left from the table above.
- Ask the seller for a battery health report. Newer software includes a battery test under Service mode (see our Service Mode guide).
- Compare the car's full-charge range with the original EPA range for that exact trim.
Track your battery with AI
AskMyEV is read-only. It can't change the warranty or the car, but it logs your car's estimated full-charge range over time so you can see the trend in plain English, inside ChatGPT, Claude or Grok.
Your estimated range at 100% has gone from 318 to 296 miles over 22 months, about 7%. That's normal for a Model Y Long Range.
Your car was delivered in March 2024 with 21,400 miles now, so your battery warranty runs to March 2032 or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the Tesla battery warranty?
8 years plus a mileage limit: 100,000 miles for Model 3 RWD and Model Y RWD/AWD, 120,000 miles for Model 3/Y Long Range (Premium) and Performance, and 150,000 miles for Model S, Model X and Cybertruck, with at least 70% capacity retention.
Does the Tesla battery warranty transfer to a new owner?
Yes. It stays with the car and runs from the original delivery date.
How much does it cost to replace a Tesla battery?
Out of warranty, a Model 3 or Model Y pack at Tesla is commonly quoted at about $13,000–$20,000 including labor; Model S and X often more. Independent shops with remanufactured packs are often cheaper.
Does Tesla replace the battery if range drops?
Only if capacity falls below 70% within the warranty term, measured by Tesla. Normal gradual loss above 70% isn't covered.
