Charging costs

What does charging your Tesla really cost?

The answer depends on your electricity rate, where you charge and your efficiency. Here's the math, with a worked example.

Short answerCost = kWh added × price per kWh. Add roughly 10–15% for charging losses at home. Cost per mile = your price per kWh ÷ miles per kWh (many Teslas get about 3.5–4 mi/kWh). At $0.12/kWh and 3.8 mi/kWh, that's about 3–4¢ per mile at home.

Home vs. Supercharger

Home charging on an off-peak or EV time-of-use rate is usually the cheapest. Supercharger prices vary by location and time of day and are shown in the car and the Tesla app before you plug in. Your Supercharger invoices are in the Tesla app under Charging. Utility rates vary widely, so use the per-kWh price on your own bill, including delivery charges.

Track charging costs with AI

AskMyEV's get_charging_sessions tool gives your AI the energy added per session, and you tell it your home rate once. Ask “What did charging cost me last month?” and it splits home vs. Supercharger and compares with gas.

September: $43.10 total for 280 kWh added (about 1,050 miles).

Home: $29.50 (88% of energy, overnight at $0.12/kWh) Supercharger: $13.60 (2 sessions)

That's about 4.1¢ per mile, roughly a quarter of a 30 mpg gas car at $4.80/gal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fully charge a Tesla?

Multiply usable battery capacity (roughly 57–100 kWh depending on model) by your price per kWh and add about 10% for losses. At $0.15/kWh, a 75 kWh pack from 0 to 100% is about $12.

Is Supercharging more expensive than home charging?

Usually, yes. Supercharger rates vary by site and time of day, while off-peak home rates are typically much lower per kWh.

How do I see how much energy each charge added?

The car's charging screen and the Tesla app show energy added. AskMyEV can summarize all sessions for a month and calculate costs for you.
