Slow at a Supercharger
- Cold battery. If the pack is cold, the car heats it before it can take full power. Navigate to the Supercharger in the car so it preconditions on the way. See battery preconditioning.
- State of charge. Charging is fastest when the battery is low and slows steadily as it fills, especially past roughly 50%, and a lot near 100%. On trips, arrive low and leave around 80%.
- Paired V2 stalls. Older 150 kW sites pair stalls (1A/1B) on one cabinet. If both are in use, power is shared. Pick a stall whose pair is empty. V3/V4 sites share differently and are rarely limited this way.
- A bad cabinet. If the rate collapses after a few minutes for no reason, and moving to a stall on a different cabinet fixes it, the station is the problem. Report it in the Tesla app.
- Hot battery. After hard driving in summer, the car may limit power until the pack cools.

Slow at home
- Remembered current. The car remembers a charge current per location. Check Controls → Charging (or the Tesla app) and raise it, up to what your cable and circuit allow.
- Blinking amber light. The car reduced AC current, often because of power fluctuations or a hot plug, connector or outlet. Re-seat the connector, check the outlet and adapter, and charge somewhere cooler if possible.
- Circuit limits. A 120V outlet adds only a few miles of range per hour; a 240V circuit and Wall Connector is far faster.
- Cold weather. Some energy goes to warming the battery before it charges, so the first part of a winter session can be slow.
Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Slow from the start, cold day | Cold battery | Navigate to the charger next time; wait a few minutes |
| Fast, then slowing above ~50% | Normal taper | Leave at the % you need |
| Half speed at a 150 kW site | Shared V2 stall | Move to an unpaired stall |
| Sudden drop, same at one site | Faulty cabinet | Different cabinet or site; report it |
| Home rate lower than usual | Remembered current / heat | Check Controls → Charging; inspect the plug |
Ask AI about your charging sessions
With AskMyEV connected, your AI reads your charging sessions and can spot patterns, like one site that's always slow.
You arrived at 58% and the battery was cold (it was 34°F and the route wasn't set to the Supercharger), so it started at about 40 kW.
Next time, navigate to the Supercharger in the car so it warms the battery, and arrive lower if you can.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Tesla charging slowly at a Supercharger?
Usually a cold battery, a high state of charge (speed tapers above about 50%), a shared V2 stall, or a faulty cabinet. Navigate to the charger so the car preconditions.
Why is my Tesla charging slowly at home?
The car may have remembered a lower charge current for that location (Controls → Charging), or reduced current because of heat or an unstable supply (blinking amber light).
Do Tesla Superchargers slow down when another car plugs in?
On older V2 sites, paired stalls (1A/1B) share one cabinet, so yes. V3 and V4 sites are rarely limited this way.
Does cold weather slow Tesla charging?
Yes. A cold battery accepts charge slowly until it warms up. Preconditioning on the way to a fast charger fixes most of it.
