Why preconditioning matters
Lithium-ion cells accept charge slowly when cold. Arrive at a Supercharger with a cold pack and the car spends the first part of the session heating it, at a low charging rate. A warm pack also gives full regenerative braking and slightly better efficiency.
Preconditioning for fast charging
- On the touchscreen, search for the Supercharger (or a third-party fast charger shown in the car's charger list) and start navigation.
- Look for “Preconditioning battery for fast charging” on the map panel. It typically starts 10–45 minutes before arrival depending on temperature and distance.
- Keep the route active until you plug in. Cancelling navigation stops it.
- If your fast charger isn't in the car's navigation, owners commonly set a nearby Supercharger instead.
Preconditioning before you drive
- Turn on climate from the Tesla app, or set Scheduled Departure in the car's charging settings. Tesla's manuals suggest about 30–45 minutes ahead in cold weather.
- Plug in first. Plugged in, the heat comes from the wall, not your range.
- Unplugged, preconditioning uses the pack and won't run when the battery is low.

When preconditioning doesn't run
- You navigated with a phone app instead of the car's navigation.
- The trip is too short to warm the pack meaningfully; a long-cold pack can take longer than a 10-minute drive.
- The battery is already warm enough (no message is shown).
- Low state of charge when unplugged.

Ask AI before you leave
AskMyEV is read-only: it can't start climate or precondition for you. It can tell you your charge, range and charging history, and remind you which Supercharger to put in the car's navigation.
You're at 34%. Set the Supercharger as your destination in the car's navigation before you leave, so it warms the battery on the 25-minute drive.
If you can, start climate from the Tesla app 30 minutes before you leave while you're still plugged in.

Frequently asked questions
How do I precondition my Tesla battery for Supercharging?
Set the Supercharger as the destination in the car's navigation. The car warms the battery automatically and shows “Preconditioning battery for fast charging”.
Can I precondition a Tesla for a non-Tesla fast charger?
Yes, on software 2025.2 or later, by navigating to a third-party fast charger listed in the car's navigation. Phone navigation doesn't trigger it.
Is there a manual battery preconditioning button?
Not for fast charging; navigation is the trigger. Starting climate from the app or using Scheduled Departure warms the cabin and, as needed, the battery.
How long does preconditioning take?
Tesla suggests about 30–45 minutes in cold weather; it depends on outside temperature and how cold the pack is.
